Watched Organizations
Here is a list of Church-affiliated organizations that happen not to be exactly what they pretend to be and / or with arguably questionable practices.
Note that this list is far from being comprehensive. To the best of our knowledge, this information is accurate, but if you have any correction or addition, please contact us at info@octopusdei.org.
The data entry will be progressive. We have a rough objective of nearly a hundred organizations complete with links, analysis, images, videos, etc. It will all be done (we hope) during the next few weeks.
International
Opus Dei
In the late 70's, the Vatican is troubled by an incredible politico-financial scandal. In order to cover up the dept of the IOR ("Istituto per le Opere di Religione", the Vatican bank), which would be partly attributable to terrorist far right faction sponsoring, help is requested from the Opus Dei (in english, Work Of God) who, thanks to its nebulous satellite organization network, could easily elude a financial audit by the police authority. In return, the Opus Dei gets the near total control on the various bodies of power of the Holy See, its founder is canonized record time, and its status is modified so that the innumerable cells of its tentacular international structure get around the local ecclesiastic authority and depend only on the pope. Originally a franquist movement, the Opus Dei now aspires to be a lobby-militia acting for the re-establishment of the temporal power of the Church, and the moral control. Besides the Franco husbands, its founder, José Maria Escriva de Balaguer, was the spiritual adviser of Augusto Pinochet. Amongst other campaigns, the Opus Dei promotes a christian fundamentalism reformulated with humanistic liberal semantics.
Vatican
A mercantile and highly lucrative business, the Holy See is in fact one of the oldest companies of the world, with its president, its clients and partners, its lobbies, its products and services, its marketing department, its human resources, its corporate assets, its growth objectives, its industrial secrets, etc.

Hawthorn is an independent school for girls from junior kindergarten to preparatory. Founded in 1989, and affiliated to the Opus Dei, Hawthorn's summarized principle, taken from its online documentation, is that "underlying all the activities of the school is the unquestioned acknowledgment of the existence of God, of knowable truth and moral absolutes." Indeed, we can quote an ex-student, Jacquie Nivet ("True 'sex education' forms character and virtue", The Interim, January 1999) : "Sex, therefore, is never specifically addressed by the teacher. Instead, each student is shown how to live a chaste life, respecting her body and sexuality and always remembering that she is a daughter of God and a temple of the Holy Spirit. The details of puberty and intercourse and its repercussions are left to the parents' discretion."

H3G 1A8
Here are terms that the french-canadian journalist Michel Legault (l'Actualité, Vol 18, No 5, April 1 1993, "Opus Dei ou Octopus Dei?") used to describe the place : "the headquarters of the Work in Canada, the real head office, is located at 1374 and 1380 Pine avenue, a few steps away from Pierre Elliott Trudeau's house. The residence (two contiguous buildings) was acquired from Holy Family Sisters for 450 000 dollars by the "Fondation pour la culture et l'éducation" in July 1983. Of neo-mauresque style, it looks more of like a private club than a presbytery. On eight floors, priests in black dresses and Roman collars come and go in the richly decorated rooms, complete with sophisticated woodworks and stylish furniture. The mass is celebrated everyday in the chapel, in Latin between members, and in French when a visitor is present." In addition to accommodating the priests of the organization, Tour-des-Pins also houses male numerary members.
Résidence Piedmond
5643 Rue Plantagenet
Montréal (Québec)
Canada
H3T 1S3
Piedmont is a student residence for men located on the Université de Montréal's campus. Neighbor of the Opus Dei's information office, it is impossible to get information other than from the general Financial Institutions Inspector of Quebec, which indicates that the residence is managed by an organization named "Les Amis de Piedmont" (Friends of Piedmont). It also mentions the Ganunda Club (listed by Michel Legault, in 1993), which seems to be a former initiative of this same association.
Résidence la Rocaille
1242 croissant Redpath
Montréal (Québec)
Canada
H3G 2K1
Also known by the name of "Deakin house", after its builder, and located near "Tour-des-Pins" and the Headford Cultural Club and "Fondation pour la culture et l'éducation" offices, the "Rocaille" residence accommodates Opus Dei's female numeraries, in Montreal.
Fonteneige University Residence
5615 avenue Woodbury
Montréal (Québec)
Canada
H3T 1S6
Tel : 514-342-6925
Fax : 514-731-2600
Email : fonteneige@vif.com
It is indicated, on Fonteneige's web site, that the residence is opened to women of all races, beliefs or ethnic origins, but it is also specified an Opus Dei chaplain celebrates the daily mass in a chapel of Roman catholic rite and that activities of spiritual enrichment (that nothing allows to suppose that they have anything ecumenical nor even syncretistic) are proposed to the students. The Fonteneige residence is located on the Université de Montréal's campus, very close to the Piedmont residence and the Opus Dei's information office.

Email : info@boisgomin.ca
This residence for men is located at less than a kilometer away from the Laval University, in Quebec City. According to the General Inspector of The Financial Institutions of Quebec, Boisgomin is a property of the "Fondation Haratan" (also known under the name of "Association Haratan"). Michel Legault (l'Actualité, Vol 18, No 5, April 1 1993, "Opus Dei ou Octopus Dei?") listed a "Haratan Residence", belonging to Opus Dei, but it would seem that Boisgomin is its new name. The internet domain "boisgomin.ca" was registered by David Zilioli, of the "Fondation pour la culture et l'éducation", in Montreal.
Trimar University Residence
2578 Chemin Saint-Louis
Sainte-Foy (Québec)
Canada
G1W 1N2
Tel : 418-658-8584
Fax : 418-658-8584
Email : trimar@total.net
Female equivalent, by its vocation and geographical situation, to the Boisgomin residence, Trimar, considering that its web site is translated into Spanish in addition to English and French (Canada's official languages), targets the foreign student who, thanks to the family separation and linguistic isolation, easily gives herself up to indoctrination (note that this seems to be the case for all Opus Dei student residence). In its online documentation, under the header "Other residences", contact information for the Fonteneige and Valrideau residences are given. It is said that they "are similar to Trimar", but is carefully omitted that what these residences have in common is due to their affiliation to Opus Dei.
